The museum has two internship opportunities: Summer Educator Internship & Summer History Internship

Summer Educator Internship

June - August

This on-site internship is best suited for students majoring in biology and/or conservation, or are interested in natural history and public programming.

Overview: Interns will conduct public programs and tours for youth and adults. They will assist with aquarium care and overall management of the museum’s living exhibits. They will also assist in outreach, speaking to the public and other organizations about the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum. They will aid in developing new exhibits, educational programs, and social media content for the museum.

Education & Interpretation tasks: The museum educator intern will conduct public programs and tours for various age groups and demographics.

Summer Programs and Tours include:

Aquarium Program: Our aquarium program covers information on native aquatic wildlife. Within this program, interns will introduce several live animals on exhibit, such as our seahorses, horseshoe crabs, diamondback terrapin, and various native fish. The audience will learn how to identify native wildlife and each animal's role in its ecosystem.
Shark Program: This interactive program informs visitors about sharks migrating off Ocean City's coast. This program talks about the significant role sharks play within our ecosystem.
Land Sky & Sea Program: This program takes place outside, overlooking the Ocean City inlet. As visitors use binoculars to look out at the inlet, our intern talks about how the island was formed, what birds fly overhead, and what animals inhabit our ocean and coastal bays.
History Tour: Our history program covers information on the US Life-Saving Service. The audience will learn about different devices used to rescue ships in distress.

Outreach: Using educational tools and flyers, interns will educate the public about the US Life Saving Station Museum during local festivals and museum events.

Aquarium Care: Interns will assist with the collection of exhibit animals, test water quality on all aquariums, help with water changes, and overall care of aquariums.

Summer History Internship

June - August

This on-site internship suits students majoring in museum studies, museum education, library/archival science, or history.

Overview: The History Intern will work with the Curator and Assistant Curator to help strengthen the museum's mission. Tasks completed by the intern will inspire visitors to appreciate the cultural history of Ocean City, Maryland.

Education & Interpretation: The museum history educator intern will conduct public programs and tours for various age groups and demographics.

Responsibilities include:

Summer programs: Interns will work with onsite educators to give the history of our Surfman program. This program allows attendees to look closely at the equipment the United States Life Saving Service once used to rescue distressed ships.
Group Tours: Interns will provide group tours with our Station 4 Historic Tour. The tour offers an overview of the history of our building and the United States Life Saving Service.

Collections and Archives: Interns will assist with digitizing photos, postcards, and historical documents. They will also help with re-housing collections, general object research, cataloging, and processing artifacts using the Past Perfect Software Program.

Research: Interns will conduct research into Ocean City's cultural history. The findings will be added to the museum's research library.
